Laser Hair Removal in Ottawa
Three Technologies. One Personalized Approach.
Laser hair removal is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Several factors influence the most suitable technology and treatment settings, including skin tone, melanin levels, hair colour, hair thickness, the treatment area and the stage of hair growth.
At Rocaderm Clinic, our advantage is choice.
Rather than relying on a single hair-removal technology for every client, we have access to three advanced laser and light-based technologies:
This allows our trained providers to assess your skin and hair characteristics and select an individualized treatment approach.
Whether you have fair, medium, olive, brown or deeply pigmented skin, your treatment begins with an assessment to determine the technology and parameters appropriate for you.
Why Choose Rocaderm Clinic for Laser Hair Removal?
1. 808-nm Diode Laser
Precise, Efficient & Versatile
Our diode laser uses an 808 nm wavelength designed for professional hair reduction. It targets melanin within the hair, delivering controlled heat to the follicle to progressively reduce its ability to produce hair while minimising the impact on surrounding skin.
The technology offers different treatment modes that can be adapted to the client’s skin tone, hair characteristics, sensitivity and treatment area. Advanced contact cooling also helps protect the skin and improve treatment comfort.
Why We Use It
The diode laser is particularly valuable for:
-
Efficient treatment of larger body areas
-
Coarse and pigmented hair
-
Customized treatment across a broad range of skin tones
-
Progressive reduction in hair density and regrowth
-
Clients seeking a fast and comfortable treatment experience
Understanding Your Fitzpatrick Skin Type
Your provider may refer to your Fitzpatrick skin type during your consultation.
The Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype Scale is a clinical classification system used to describe how the skin typically responds to ultraviolet (UV) exposure, particularly its tendency to burn or tan.
It ranges from Type I to Type VI.
Why Does This Matter?
Melanin, the pigment responsible for skin and hair colour, interacts with light and laser energy. For this reason, skin type is an important consideration when selecting a hair-removal technology and determining the appropriate treatment settings.
However, your Fitzpatrick skin type is only one part of the assessment. Your provider will also consider your actual skin pigmentation, current tan, recent sun exposure, hair colour and thickness, treatment area, medications, medical history and previous responses to laser or light-based treatments.

What Areas Can Be Treated?
Laser hair removal can be performed on many areas of the face and body, including:
Face & Neck
Upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns and neck
Upper Body
Underarms, shoulders, arms, forearms, hands, fingers, chest, abdomen and back
Lower Body
Bikini line, Brazilian, buttocks, thighs, lower legs, full legs, feet and toes
Treatment suitability is confirmed during your consultation. Contact us to discuss laser hair removal ottawa treatment options for your preferred areas.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Laser hair removal in Ottawa is typically delivered as a series of treatments because hair grows in different stages, and not all hairs are in the same growth phase at the same time.
Laser and light-based hair-removal treatments are most effective when the target hairs are in the appropriate active growth phase. For this reason, multiple sessions are needed to achieve optimal results.
Most clients can expect an initial course of approximately 6–8 treatments, although additional sessions may be required depending on individual needs and treatment response.
The number of sessions varies according to several factors, including:
-
Treatment area
-
Hair colour
-
Hair thickness and density
-
Skin type
-
Hormonal influences
-
Individual hair-growth cycle
-
Previous hair-removal methods
-
Response to treatment
How Often Are Treatments Performed?
As a general starting schedule:
-
Facial areas: approximately every 4 weeks
-
Body areas: approximately every 6 weeks
Your provider may adjust the interval as your hair growth changes throughout your treatment series.

Before Your Appointment
For a safe and effective treatment experience, follow these preparation guidelines before your laser hair removal appointment:
-
Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure before your appointment, and follow the clinic’s sun-protection instructions.
-
Avoid waxing, tweezing and epilating the treatment area for approximately four weeks before treatment, as the hair follicle needs to remain intact for the laser to target it effectively.
-
Shave the treatment area 12–24 hours before your appointment, unless your provider advises otherwise.
-
Arrive with clean skin, free from lotions, oils, deodorant, perfume, cosmetics and self-tanner.
Please inform your provider about any of the following before treatment:
-
Current medications
-
Existing medical conditions
-
Pregnancy or possible pregnancy
-
Recent sun exposure or tanning
-
Changes in your skin
-
Recent aesthetic or medical procedures
-
Previous reactions to laser or IPL treatments
Your provider will review your information and determine whether any additional precautions or adjustments are needed before proceeding.
What Results Should I Expect?
Laser hair removal is best described as a method of long-term hair reduction. Its aim is to progressively reduce the amount and density of hair growing in the treated area.
Results vary depending on your hair characteristics, skin type, hormonal influences, treatment area, adherence to your treatment schedule and individual response to treatment.
As hormonal changes and previously inactive hair follicles can contribute to new hair growth over time, occasional maintenance sessions may be recommended to help maintain your results.
Your Laser Hair Removal Journey Starts with the Right Technology
The most suitable hair removal technology depends on your skin tone, hair type and individual treatment goals.
Rocaderm Clinic takes a personalised approach, using different technologies to meet each client’s needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all method. Available options include:
-
808 nm Diode Laser
-
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
-
1064 nm Long-Pulsed Nd:YAG Laser
During your consultation, your provider will assess your skin characteristics, hair type and treatment area to recommend the most appropriate technology for you.
This personalised approach allows Rocaderm Clinic to provide tailored laser hair removal treatments in Ottawa, with a focus on safety, comfort and effective hair reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can laser hair removal work on grey, white or very light blonde hair?
Laser and IPL target melanin (pigment) in the hair, so they work best on dark hair. Grey, white and very light blonde hairs contain little or no pigment and often respond poorly, or not at all. During your consultation, your provider will assess your hair and tell you honestly what results are realistic, so you don't spend money on sessions that are unlikely to work.
2. Do I need to stop any medications or skincare products before treatment?
Yes, some can affect your skin's sensitivity to light. Please tell us if you use isotretinoin (Accutane), certain antibiotics, retinoids, or any photosensitizing medication or supplement. Depending on what you take, we may recommend pausing treatment or stopping a product for a period beforehand. Always share a full list of your medications and skincare products at your consultation.
3. I have PCOS or a hormonal condition. Will the hair come back?
Laser can significantly reduce hair in treated areas, but hormonal conditions like PCOS can keep stimulating new or dormant follicles over time. This doesn't mean laser won't work. It means you may need more sessions and occasional maintenance treatments. We recommend managing the underlying condition with your doctor alongside laser for the best long-term results.
4. Can laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs and razor bumps?
Many clients notice fewer ingrown hairs and less razor irritation as their hair becomes finer and sparser through the treatment series. Since laser reduces the hair that causes these bumps, it can be a helpful option for areas like the bikini line, underarms and beard line. Results vary, and skin that is currently inflamed or infected may need to settle before treatment starts.
5. Is summer a bad time to start laser hair removal in Ottawa?
Not necessarily, but sun exposure matters. A fresh tan raises the risk of side effects, so we assess your current skin tone before every session and may adjust settings or delay treatment if needed. With strict sun protection (SPF 30–50, no tanning) you can still treat many areas in summer. Many clients prefer to start in fall and winter, when skin is naturally lighter and exposure is lower.
